Lettuce is a great treat. Some koi keepers feed whole leaf lettuce to thier fish. Koi love to shred it up and tear at it, and it's a great source of Vitamin C and other nutrients.
Oranges are another great favorite. Oranges are a good source of Vitamin C, which helps reduce stress and improve the immune system of your koi. Cut them into segments, and float them in the pond with the rind left on. Your koi will busily tear away the flesh, leaving the rind.
Curiously, koi love garlic. Koi are attracted to any food coated in it. It works to help entice your koi to eat out of your hand.
Many koi keepers can't wait to have thier koi eat from thier hands. But it takes patience. Try feeding your koi from the exact same spot everytime. Approaching slowly and getting closer and closer to the pond each time. Offer a treat from your hand, hold a prawn or favorite treat in your hand and hold it in the water. It will take time, but they will come to you. Sometimes it takes adding a variety of koi like a Chagoi that are less wary and readily eat out of your hand. It won't take long and the others will follow.
