A protein skimmer

is a form of highly effective filtration that removes dissolved
substances (phosphates, ammonia, humus acids, colorants, proteins, and heavy
metals). Water enters the protein skimmer, is mixed with air, and the surface of the
air bubbles attract dissolved substances. This process is then forced thru media
increasing the contact time and creates a thick foam which is expelled out of the unit
